A Study in Biophilic Design
Populus’ interiors, designed by Wildman Chalmers Design, seamlessly align with the hotel’s overall tribute to nature and iconic Aspen-tree architecture. The design journey starts on the ground floor, where the lobby and restaurant evoke the warmth of a forest floor with rich browns and wood. Moving upward through the trunk and branches, guest rooms and suites reflect the hotel’s commitment to natural aesthetics. The rooftop restaurant, bar, and hospitality suites continue the celebration of nature, mimicking a lush tree canopy with vibrant colors and natural light. Wildman Chalmers Design intentionally incorporates natural woods, textures, and finishes, embracing the imperfections found in a forest, and adding warmth to the bold architecture with exposed concrete core and ceilings.
Studio Gang
Designed by the AD100 architecture firm Studio Gang, led by MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, Populus is their inaugural building in Colorado, poised to redefine the Denver skyline. Informed by the patterns of Colorado’s native Aspen tree (Populus Tremuloides), the design draws inspiration from nature. The distinctive windows, resembling “Aspen eyes,” efficiently adapt to Denver’s diverse climate. The façade’s texture and rhythm optimize the hotel’s interior, featuring extended “lids” over each window for indoor shade and improved energy performance.
Art Curation
The captivating art collection, carefully curated by artist and environmentalist Katherine Homes, enhances the hotel’s biophilic ethos. It goes beyond mere visual appeal, creating a complete sensory experience inspired by the emotions felt while sitting among an Aspen grove.
MycoWorks
The Populus lobby features The Reishi Tapestry, a hanging sculpture crafted from almost 500 sheets of Reishi™. This innovative leather alternative, developed by MycoWorks, utilizes the root structure of mushrooms through their patented Fine Mycelium™ platform. We proudly partnered with MycoWorks as part of our carbon-positive design approach.
